Activities
These are sample of the great variety of interesting things we dabble with over the summer workshop.
Tempera Resist
MATERIALS
buff paper, or thick US white cartolina
chalk
Dong-A poster paints
chinese brush
water
PROCEDURE
- Draw your design with the chalk. Remember to DRAW AS BIG AS THE PAPER.
- After filling your paper with the drawing, paint in the areas with the poster paints. Don't paint over the chalk lines.
- When the paint is dry, paint the whole thing with one layer of India ink.
- When the ink is dry, gently wash the paper under a running faucet to 'develop' it.
- Hang your painting up to dry.
Flour Paste Batik
MATERIALS
white t-shirt
fabric paints
brushes
1/4 white cartolina
black marker
ketchup squeeze bottle
blender
Flour Paste:
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups flour
3 tbsp. Alum powder (tawas)
PROCEDURE
- Draw the design with the black marker on the cartolina.
- Slip the cartolina into the shirt.
- Blend the flour, water and tawas together. A bowl and fork will do if you don't have a blender.
- Pour the paste, which should have the consistency of pancake batter, into the ketchup squeeze bottle.
- You should be able to see the design through the shirt fabric. Use the squeeze bottle to trace the design with the flour paste.
- Let the flour paste dry. This may take more than a day if the weather is humid.
- Crack the paste by crumpling up the shirt and pressing it into a ball.
- Open up the shirt, put newspaper inside to keep from staining the back of the shirt, and paint it with the fabric paints. Make sure the paint goes up to the lines and into the cracks to get a better 'batik' effect.
- When the paint dries, flake off the flour paste with the fleshy part of the thumb.
- For the best effect, iron the shirt before washing it.
Window Fish
MATERIALS
1/4 black cartolina
scissors
glue stick
Japanese paper, different colors
chalk or pencil
PROCEDURE
- Draw a fish or any underwater creature with pencil or chalk on the black cartolina.
- Draw the patterns of the fish too.
- Carefully cut out the patterns with the scissorstaking care not to cut through the outline of the fish.
- Trace the shapes on to the pieces of different colored scraps of Japanese paper.
- Cut these out a little bigger than the shape so you can glue the Japanese paper to the back of your cartolina fish.
- Tape the finished fish to a glass window for a stained glass effect.
